If you like computer games and, for some strange reason, you’ve never heard of the Humble Indie Bundle, I’ve got good news for ya. The Humble Bundle is a promotion by Wolfire Games where you get up to five games by indie developers for literally whatever price you want. Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, it’s not.
It’s a brilliant promotion, and has proven so with the sales figures. The first one garnered a cool million, and the second one brought in $1.8 million. The newest promotion features indie developer Frozenbyte with the games Trine, Shadowgrounds, and Shadowgrounds: Survivor, as well as the unfinished executable for Jack Claw, and a pre-order for their newest game, Splot.
Trine is a side-scrolling action/puzzle game that allows for three-player coop, with players utilizing a thief, knight, and wizard character to make their way through the physical obstacles of each level.
Shadowgrounds is a top-down shooter where players tread the shadowy grounds of a space colony with a flashlight, trying to survive an alien attack.
Shadowgrounds: Survivor is the sequel to Shadowgrounds, with added RPG elements and two more playable characters.
These games are all new to me, so I can’t wait to try them out. These Humble Bundles are about as good as a gaming promotion gets, and no matter how much you pay it goes to a good cause. The system allows you to split up your payment amongst the developers, the Humble Bundle website (for bandwidth and whatnot), and two charities: the Electronics Frontier Foundation, and the Child’s Play Charity. You can choose to give it all to one source, or give a bit to everyone. Further, and perhaps my favorite part of the package, they give you the soundtracks to the games. If you’re into game music, this is a major plus. Here’s the real kicker, though: All of these games work on every major platform. Windows, Mac, Linux, doesn’t matter. You really can’t go wrong with this promotion.
