Remember cafeteria cobblers? You know, those mushy piles of fruit and pie crumbles that elementary schools called food despite your skepticism? Well Dole’s apple cinnamon Fruit Crisp cup is nothing like that. I know because during a school-wide food fight one of the known bullies dumped a bucket of the stuff over my head. A nearby teacher saw the tomfoolery and punished our wastefulness by making us eat all the leftover cobbler for the remainder of the year. Peach quickly became my favorite.
In terms of consistency, the apples used within Dole’s little fruit cup resemble those served to kids by hair-netted old fogies – they’re soft and covered in fruit gel, a la pie filling. The key ingredient to making this a “crisp” affair is the granola Dole calls “crunchy oat topping.” It’s the most typical granola you could possibly come by, having no standout textures or flavor. I suppose it’s worth noting that this treat is made with whole grain oats, so guess what? This treat has whole grain oats in it. Also, Vitamin C!
Dole’s got a healthy, cool little snack with its Fruit Crisp cup. In particular the apple cinnamon flavor I’ve been discussing, as I have yet to try any alternatives. Given the time it takes to put this thing together, I’d probably eat another one. I’d likely try other flavors, too. Tear off the cardboard, remove fork, and mix everything together to enjoy. It’s a simple process that’s not exactly rewarding but doesn’t taste half bad either. This is honestly the most neutral experience I’ve had with a food item, so I’ll conclude by saying that if you like eating tiny portions of delicious pie internals mixed with the most generic granola conceived, the Dole Fruit Crisp cup is right up your alley.
