It’s pretty nice that every week Funny or Die Presents is fairly democratic with at least some semblance of choice, but this week was more communist than Kim Jong Il and Joseph Stalin riding around in a nuclear powered submarine. That’s right, it was just one long short film. Surprisingly enough, it was the only the second one with Will Ferrell. Before the show aired I figured he would’ve been in like all of them. He also brought with him some good guest stars in Tim Meadows and David Spade, two guys that usually do a pretty good job of making me chuckle.
The overall story was about three brothers whose father owned a local business named “Carpet Galaxy.” Sadly enough, it wasn’t Spade and Ferrell playing the other brothers, but two comedians who I have never heard of, and I’d like to think I know a decent amount of independent comedians. After his death, they were left with the business and some very important instructions left in a “jazz will” to meet up with Ferrell’s character, Grant Measum. He owns a huge line of hotels that all need recarpeting, but he’s deciding between the Carpet Bros and David Spade’s character, Raymond Davies Allen.
The whole thing is shot in a hilarious 70′s styled manner that perfectly matches the overall feel of the show. There are plenty of little unique quirky things that make it really enjoyable, my favorite being when someone speaks about a local business, we cut to a commercial for the place and it’s usually quite funny. While all of the characters are enjoyable, the whole piece feels too much like a stretched out sketch. The overall narrative isn’t strong, and with all of that extra time to take up, they left in jokes that would probably have otherwise been cut. It’s a fun watch, but not nearly as fun as I was expecting when I heard the three big names.
In other news, I’ve been wrong this whole time and it looks like we’re actually getting a 12 episode season. See you for another three weeks!
