Mountain Dew Ultraviolet

**UPDATE** — Due to the overwhelming majority of commenters wishing this drink to return, I’ve created a petition to send to PepsiCo. Please sign it if you want Ultra Violet back!

So, I admit that I’m pretty late reviewing this drink, which is even less useful due to the fact that Pepsi Co only intended it to be on shelves for six weeks, and I think I’m currently around week three. I’m also late because the day before they officially came out, one of our local grocery stores stocked it a bit too early and next thing I know John Hoy shows up with two icy cold bottles. We passed the bottles around the room like a bunch of frat guys with a cheap bottle of vodka, but we all essentially came to the same verdict, and to keep it from getting lengthy it was simply, “kinda berry and kinda diet.”

I was aimlessly wandering a local gas station looking for new products, as I often do when I get gas and shockingly enough, there was nothing, which always leaves me disappointed. Until I got to the soda display. Out of two whole refrigerators full of bottled soda at $1.29 a piece, that stupid purple drink that looks like Nuka Cola Quantum was only 99 cents. Hopefully that alone speaks for how successful it has been. Must be really, really delicious right?

We’ve had a pretty good relationship with Mountain Dew here at WRS, we even held one of their contests for crying out loud, and to be honest I don’t even think there’s a flavor of Mountain Dew I don’t like. But, seriously guys I don’t know if we can be friends anymore, an only diet soda?! You have to be smoking drugs to come up with an Idea like that, but I digress. Time to re-create this horrible drinking process again.

Smelling it is pretty awesome, the aroma of berries present is actually enticing, almost as if to trick you by saying, “Hey, I smell delicious, how in the world could I taste bad?” If I could break it down for ya, I would have to say that it has a decent berry taste, which is actually quite good until the storm of the fake sugar Aspartame rushes in and makes your taste buds plead for mercy, as if at the hands of the Joker or something. Who the hell decided that stuff could take the place of sugar? My bet is it was a failed government experiment for some kind of torture liquid.

As if you haven’t gotten it yet, this isn’t exactly a good drink in my book. The concept of a whole bunch of berries is brilliant, and tastes like something awesome Willy Wonka would make, but sorry Mt. Dew, you killed this baby of yours. Legend has it they smothered it to death with fake sugar. Although, I would love to hear what diet drinkers think, because if you can get past the fake sugar aftertaste, this could possibly be a tasty soda for you.

  1. >I like it, but I only drink diet so….

  2. >It's terrible. Diet Mtn Dew (classic), Pespi Max, Coca-Cola Zero, etc. don't taste like diet stuff to me but Ultra Violet sure does. The effect is not unlike Robitussin.

  3. >Listen up, Michael Kaitis……..you'll drink this, and you'll like it!!!!

  4. >Its great stuff. I really hate to see it off the shelves though. For us diet soda guys. Is a nice alternative to the typical cola.BTW, take one and pour it in a clear glass over some ice. The bubbles are pink, but the drink stays purple. Funky.

  5. >Need more… can't… find… anywhere…Seriously – for a diet only drinker, this is a welcome addition to the very small family of two created by the pepsico folks (I hear there's caffiene free diet dew out there, but all we get in Arizona is code red and standard… and what's the point of caffiene free dew???).

  6. >I only drink diet and I LOVE this stuff!!!!!

  7. >They really need to bring back Pitch Black II

  8. >This was the best diet drink I've tasted in a long time. I have all my friends looking for it when they go somewhere to see if there is any left out there

  9. >So I think it's safe to say that for the most part, Diet beverage drinkers love this.

  10. >I love this flavor. Finally, a diet addition to the Mt. Dew family of flavors. I first read about it here:http://mountain-dew-rocks.blogspot.com/I heard it's not sticking around for long, but I wish they would consider making it a permanant member of the Mt. Dew collection.

  11. >The only diet drink I can stomach, all the rest has a bad aftertaste. This one does not. Love it and I wish they would keep it in production.

  12. >I like it. I'm diabetic and can't have the sugared drinks and sodas. I'd like to see it kept on the market. I'd be a regular customer just as I am of the regular diet Dew.

  13. >I LOVE this drink and now I can't find it anymore. Makes me SAD. It was great with a little vodka.

  14. >Ofcourse you're not gonna like it if you drink regular Mtn Dew! I am diabetic and had to quit drinking Dew, and I hate Diet Dew because it just makes me want a REAL ONE! But this new Ultra Violet had me buying Mtn Dew again, by the cases! PepsiCo loses my money by taking it away and by the sounds of it, many other diet drinkers too!

  15. Zak

I drink Diet Mountain Dew by the gallon, but I couldn't take a whole bottle of this crap. It tastes like chemicals.

  16. DIET MTN DEW Ultra Violet was the best diet drink I've tasted in a long time, any diet soda. And of course once you find something they take it away. My last 12 pack was dated NOV 16 09. If I had only known to stock up!!
