I have a soft spot for the flavor of Blackberries. It might sound kinda dumb, but Blackberry “fruit on the bottom” yogurt was the first flavor that I actually truly enjoyed, thus bringing me further into the worlds of both fruit AND yogurt, which are pretty enjoyable territories. Yogurt and I are on pretty good terms now, and Blackberries and I, even better. Not the portable devices, though; that scroll ball is entirely unsatisfactory to me for some reason.
Smart Phones aside, Blue Bell recently released (or so the “New!” on it would have me believe) Southern Blackberry Cobbler ice cream. After staring at this product in awe for a good thirty seconds or so, I made my move. As I moved my hand shakily toward the frosty handle that would surely unlock the future of my destiny, I… oh, sorry. I grabbed the ice cream and made my way toward the checkout line.
Upon first taste of this ice cream, you might flip out. It’s (at first) exactly what you’d expect and more. As you move past the first few bites, you’ll inevitably run across a few “pie crust” pieces, which I had no idea were included, but I guess the ‘cobbler’ part should’ve tipped me off. Normally, the inclusion of pie crust pieces would have me over the moon, but Blue Bell doesn’t seem to have figured out the pie crust element yet. They’re a bit strange; the pieces are translucent, almost clear, and they’re chunky and a bit chewy. I don’t know if this is some kind of healthy pie crust or something, but it’s definitely a bit different. The problem with it is the flavor is kinda not there. there’s like 18% pie crust flavor, 82% “wtf is this? it’s tasteless”. But I will admit it does add some nice texture to the ice cream.
Pie crusts aside, I would’ve liked it if they included maybe some actual Blackberry pieces, or at least some more of the flavor swirls they sparingly threw in. The Blackberry flavor, after a while, kind of nulls itself out. Your mouth just gets too used to the flavor, I guess. All of these complaints don’t add up to very much, though, because when you get down to it, this is still really good ice cream. Any fan of Blackberries in general will probably love this.

>I LOVE real blackberry cobbler topped with vanilla ice cream, but this stuff is gross! I threw it away!
>I thought this stuff was kind of really delicious, but I’ve never had actual blackberry cobbler so I guess I can’t compare the two.
>Brad, My only question is where did you find a container? I’ve been eagerly awaiting Blue Bell’s third run of this flavor. I even bought a new chest-style freezer to stock up. I’m not joking. The three months of Southern Blackberry Cobbler are always the best of each year!
>Well, Ken, I bought this particular container of fantastic at my local Super Target. Here’s hoping you find one, too.
>best.ice.cream.ever.and i can only find the small cartons – mean old blue bell hates us here in williamson county
>We ask a local representative of the company and he said that it was discontinued. Is this true? We love this ice cream!!
>It's possible that it has been discontinued, but what is more likely is the situation that ol' Ken up there referred to — they only sell this ice cream for a few months out of the year. I'm inclined to believe that you were probably just a bit too late, and it will most likely be back next year.
>I loved it! it was great- but I can't find it in the stores anymore! I loved the bits of cobbler crust in it….so good and all my friends loved it as well!
>Got a half gallon today at the new San Marcos Super Target. Great.
>The newest version doesn't seem to have enough pie crust in it…
>Eating it right now not as good as I thought it would be not digging the pie crust I found it at Publix
>I love Blue Bell but this flavor is just gross. The pie crust pieces taste like chalk and the ice cream itself is too sweet. Blueberry Cheesecake is 10x better.
SO FREAKING AWESOME… They must have fixed the pie crust because I have no complaints
