Lil Wayne - Prom Queen

If you’re Lil Wayne, what else is there to do with your career? Undoubtedly on top of his game coming off the already legendary Tha Carther III, plus out of all of the albums that came out last year, his album is up not just for Best Rap Album, but a serious contender for Album of the Year. So at this point, what the hell else do you do? He’s mostly proven to everyone (including me, I was a hater) on the planet that he really is the greatest rapper alive. So, I assume during a marijuana-induced brainstorming session, he was like fuck it, let’s do a rock song.

A pretty cool sounding guitar intro plays straight into some drums that have an undeniable rap feel to them. Wayne took the T-Pain route with a healthy dose of auto-tune on this track, which usually is for the best because most rappers aren’t known for their singing ability, but this seems to further blend the genres in ways I’ve never heard before. The verse guitar is a pretty plain power chord progression with a pretty nu-metal sounding distortion tone. Not surprisingly the guitar isn’t as complex as it could be, but I’m pretty sure it’s written by Wayne himself, a novice guitar player.

Brad describes the song as drone-y, which I can easily see agreeing with. It’s completely auto-tuned, which has such a crazy tone mixed with Wayne’s unique voice, and the guitar isn’t anything original. But it’s the badass factor – the edginess of Wayne’s music that makes this song so good. It’s a ballsy move, which works much better than Willie Nelson’s rap effort or Bruce Willis’ Return of Bruno. The drums have a hip-hop edge, and the overall song is pretty damn catchy. Is it 808′s and Heartbreak good? No, but I wasn’t really impressed when I heard the first song on that either, so we’ll have to wait for the album for the comparisons. Someone should really tell Weezy that all rock songs don’t have to be about girls though.

Halestorm – Halestorm

Not to be confused with an actual hail storm despite the presence of hard rock(s) in each. Although it's entirely possibly that Halestorm could hale a hail storm; I'm sure Mitch Hedberg would concur that it'd be so dam...

Lady Gaga - Born This Way Review

Lady Gaga – Born This Way

That album cover is insane. I still can't figure out why Tommy Lee or Brett Michaels aren't riding her, though. Either way, Emily had her way with this album. Let her words have their way with you.

Ra Ra Riot – The Orchard

I listened to The Orchard without having heard Ra Ra Riot's debut album, so once I found out they weren't a silly punk band I had no idea what to expect. What I least expected, though, was to find lush orchestra backdrops and f...

Dr. Dog - Shame, Shame

Dr. Dog – Shame, Shame

Dr. Dog is kind of a strange band... they dress like they're miners and chimney sweeps from the 1930s, but their music tends to sound like it's from the sixties. All I know is that they craft some seriously catchy, vocally rich...

Motion City Soundtrack – My Dinosaur Life

I don't know what kind of life you'd lead if you had a Dinosaur life, but odds are it would be much more exciting than the one you have now. I'd personally love to ride a Stegosaurus to the grocery store; talk about arriving in...

  1. >Thank god for there being another person who thinks Wayne is decent and listens to other types of music as well. 10 bucks says this album flops, but I think it’s a hilarious idea. Definitely from a ‘marijuana induced brainstorming session,’ that’s for sure.Peace and Love[Matthew]
