What I love most about Futurama is the concept. Being set in the future, the show makes its basis a culmination of all things science fiction and nerdy. When said show is created by the insanely smart writers of the Simpsons, the show becomes lovable, and in this case, for lack a better term, super fucking awesome. The third of the four new Futurama films, following the great Bender’s Big Score and The Beast with a Billion Backs, Bender’s Game is a movie dedicated to the late creator of Dungeons and Dragons, Gary Gygax, who’s actually been in an episode of the show with Al Gore.
Bender’s Game ditches the running plot of the past two movies. Everyone’s favorite evil, multi-national energy conglomerate CEO, Mom, utilizes her monopoly on the Dark Matter industry and spikes the price of the fuel to record high levels. In a convenient staff, meeting the professor explains how Dark Matter became a fuel, and how Mom can be stopped. Way to go Planet sucking Express, you always save the day.
Being dedicated to the creator of D&D, it’s only fitting that they at least refer to the infamous game. It’s even more fitting that Bender’s whole subplot, and consequently the title of the movie, revolve around the game, with the last half hour or so descending into a segment actually set within a fully animated Dungeons and Dragons game.
Not much, if anything, can ever go wrong with Futurama. I could almost complain about pacing issues, but since no one knows what else might be coming after one more movie, I’d much rather take in all the precious seconds of film I can get. Not enough Zoidberg during the fantasy parts though. This movie features everything that makes the show great, from amazingly animated 2D and 3D shots, great one liners, hilarious dialogue, quality voice acting, a NEW Futurama story WITH episode continuity, recurring main, supporting, and background characters, guest stars, and maybe even a message or two.
With jokes referencing old topics like M.C Hammer, the amazing Beatles Yellow Submarine opening to sci-fi fan favorites Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and maybe even Half Life, any fan of geek humor will revel in this movie. Bender’s Game also rewards old fans with jokes from old episodes, such as Bender’s old buddy Roberto, and something we’ve always heard about but never seen, the Killbots. There are too many good things about Futurama to miss this, and any amount of words couldn’t amount to the justice a simple viewing would do. The wide variety of jokes makes the show great for a huge range of ages, too. If you’re not headed to iTunes or the store now, make sure it finds your way this holiday season.
