Heroes (S03E06)

Last week, I didn’t even bother writing a review for Heroes because after what had happened that week, I believed the series had officially made its characters too stupid to live, and thought there was no way in hell this show was going to redeem itself with the way the story has been going this season. I’m of course talking about the whole Hiro killing Ando thing just to prove he’s “badass”. Luckily, “Dying of the Light” managed to prove me wrong, and make me just as giddy as I was before. Hell, this episode alone is Heroes’ return to form. The storyline was thrilling every second, the humor was extravagant, and finally, finally we seem to be having a real team of Heroes and Villains teaming up.

First off, here’s my only complaint this episode; they killed off my favorite character. Pre-Credits, even. I mean, sure, David Anders may have had too busy a schedule to really fit in this season, but when you kill off a character as important as he was in the last season, five minutes into the episode, you can’t help but feel let down that Adam’s never going to bumble by again to try and kill everyone. I understand why they would have to kill him off; Papa Petrelli is likely going to be the best villain ever, but I wish he did a little more this season then get himself captured and killed.

Hiro’s storyline this episode was nothing short of what we saw of him in the first season. Cute, somewhat clever, and always hilarious. Cleverly tricking Knox and Daphne (It’s about time someone did something smart this season) into thinking Ando was dead was the biggest breath of fresh air a Heroes fan could breathe, and then realizing you’re going to get hit in the head with a shovel, before it actually happening, twice, is that somewhat slapstick yet hilarious humor you love to see out of the character. It’s nice to see the African Isaac stay in the picture as well.

Claire’s storyline continues to be a kind of “eh” tale to follow. I feel like everything that’s been going on with her, especially in this episode, falls outside of the whole scheme of things so far. It kind of feels like she’s hogging the spotlight, while the more interesting characters, i.e. Noah and Meredith, are so far working behind the scenes to make sure she doesn’t screw something up like she always does. Since Failure is the Only Option with her, one would hope she might have stayed dead when her mother shot her.

I’ve really never known what to think about Peter, ever. It seems like his personality just keeps changing and shifting and the writers never, ever really know what to do with him. This is why I’m really glad he’s currently depowered now thanks to his Smug Snake daddio. Now we have a real baddie to deal with who has the most powerful power of them all. Not to mention the power is with someone who actually has a functional and working brain.

All and all, this episode is the real turning point to how the rest of this Volume is going to play out. Daphne and Mohinder are finally getting interesting, Matt’s finally back in the states, and we have a crew of villains that may do something more than shoot fire from their hands and throw people with their mind. High Five, Turtle.

Also, if you haven’t been playing attention to the Graphic Novels lately, I suggest you check out this weeks. Elle and Claude ftw, my friends.

6/7

Footloose (2011)

This trend of pointlessly remaking movies was bad enough, but now they're starting to remake '80s movies. That's really bad. Maddie sat through the new remake of Footloose, yawning, and wrote this.
