Electronica is kind of a hobby of mine. I greatly appreciate the art and style of the genre, but it’s not something i’m heavily into, due to the fact that i don’t know where to start. When given the task to review the new album from renowned electronica artist/producer Daedelus, it was something I was anxious to get into.
The amount of sounds up this guy’s sleeve is mind-blowing. It being completely electronic, the guy is a professional of the highest quality in the art of music programming. Taking samples from various styles of music always keeps you guessing the style of the next track, but most of the samples used really weren’t my style. Something I found myself doing on this album, which when I’m reviewing I never do, is skipping songs before they are done. The songs by Daedelus himself are much more appealing than the ones featuring other artists, and subsequently were all I wanted to hear. I do suppose this is the flaw in using various artists though, instead of singing yourself. The vocals are constantly inconsistent, and while some vocals could be great, the next track they could be terrible, something electronic heroes like Moby and Fatboy Slim rarely have happen.
The only song on this CD I could find myself listening to ever again is “Drummery Jams,” which is a blend of ragtime piano and, of course, drums. Most of the songs on this album are too excessively Rap or R&B for my liking. This is mostly an album for those people who love the club atmosphere. It’s something I could listen to in the background, but not much more than that, and if I ever ended up doing that, you can bet it would only be the Daedelus solo songs.
