Choke is Chuck Palahniuk’s fourth literary cult-classic; upon its release in May 2001 it topped the New York Times Best Seller list at #10. Choke is the story of a man named Victor Mancini, a medical school drop out and sex addict who works in a colonial theme park. Victor is in a bind having to pay for his mother’s medical bills. To cope with this, he dines in upscale restaurants and gains the sympathy of perfect strangers by choking himself near to death on a nightly basis. By doing this, Victor turns ordinary people into heroes and finds that these people feel responsible for his life and in return send him checks and letters of encouragement.
Palahniuk’s wit and humor really shine in this book. Like much of his work, the characters in this story are quite memorable. Throughout reading this book one might start to feel as if he actually is Victor Mancini. Another strong point of this book is the way Palahniuk introduces new and unique people and situations to surround Victor throughout the story. Each one plays an important role in shaping the plot and providing a comical side to some of the series’ subject matter presented in the book. Some might be shocked from the amount of content that Palahniuk touches on, along with the amount of satire, mockery, and truth. Choke is a well-regarded underground story that holds strong till the end.
